Therapies we use:
After many years of work it is difficult to say which specific treatments your healing journey will take. Mostly our techniques just flow from one to the other depending on what will get the results we need in a way we can do it safely, quickly and economically.
However - you want to know what it is we have studied and use. A few of our practices:
Acupuncture is the only Provincially Registered Medical activity done in the clinic, and we practice the three major styles, plus one lesser known method:
- Japanese acupuncture is what we do for 95% of our patients. Japan has been developing its acupuncture technique for over 500 years. There are likely hundreds of variations in Japan but overall it is a more encompassing system than the Chinese style. It certainly hurts a lot less.
- Chinese acupuncture which has been used in China for two to three thousand years. Interestingly, “Traditional” Chinese Acupuncture was developed post 1949. Ward received a doctorate of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1996.
- Korean acupuncture has a style of treatment just using the hands. It also has a wide range of press-on materials that we use commonly with children, as there is no penetration into a person at all. It works softer and slower - both great for children (and the occasional worried adult).
- Facial Rejuvenation acupuncture is growing in leaps and bounds. It is an amazing system to revitalize the face and make a person look younger and feel great. It is something we started using for its applications in TMJ and migraines but now we use it on women all the time. The results are amazing. To learn more, see www.chiakra.com
The remaining list is NON-Registered Complementary and Alternative Modalities (CAM):
Educational Kinesiology: This is the first course for any practitioner. It is famous in schools (called Brain Gym) for working on learning disabilities - but it can do a lot more than that. At a basic level it is practicing physical movements that activate locations in our brain and connect them together, helping a person get better brain and body co-ordination. You can learn more about it here: BrainGym.org
Touch for Health: This is the core of the healing tree, where all the limbs and branches are other health modalities. Ward was very lucky to study with the founder, Dr. John Thie, an incredible clinical mind and a wonderful person who spent his life helping millions of us.
Touch for Health is a system of balancing posture, attitude and life energy to relieve stress, aches and pains, feel and function better, be more effective, clarify and achieve your goals and enjoy your life!
John passed away, but his son Mathew continues training. tfhka.org
Berry's Body Management: Al started life as a welder and then became seriously ill. He and his wife read and learned enough to heal him. Then they put together a system that is truley amazing. Al Berry’s system coordinates muscle testing to assess the physical, structural, emotional, mental and spiritual harmony of people and animals.
Specific protocol of assessment and correction techniques based on sequential procedures assists in muscular-skeletal realignment, internal organ realignment, lymphatic circuit breakers release, joint release. Techniques include cold laser cranial realignment, nutritional and environmental support as well as multi-linked acupressure.
A Body Management Balance is as intricate as it is simple, by focusing on structural alignment of bones and organs to first release blocked nerve and acupuncture energy in the body. Next, power centers and circuit breakers are addressed. If power centers are not activated, the body will only hold its correction for a few hours, or even only minutes. Acupuncture meridian energy is then balanced to relieve over-energy, and scans for emotional/mental stress are performed to help lock in the correction through the diffusion of these stressors, releasing sabotage from continuing to affect the physical body.
Wellness kinesiology: Ward was lucky to train with Wayne Topping - one of the earliest students in the Kinesiology movement. He really has worked with everyone. Wayne specializes in allergy management has test kits with thousands and thousands of samples of toxins in them. Truly an interesting guy. WellnessKinesiology.com
Bowen therapy: Learned in Australia, it is very popular on the other side of the world. Light touch therapy is made by a guy with no formal training in anything, but who was studied by the Australian Govt. in relation to Natural Healing Therapies and was documented working with over 10 thousand people a year! What’s more - the average person saw him less than twice! He really was a miracle worker. However, he was very secretive and only trained one person who made a promise to teach no one until 10 years passed from his death. All very strange but it does get results. BowTech.com
Nutritional counseling: In addition to having once been certified as a Red Seal Chef, Ward has researched 50+ books and courses on the subject, and a student of nutrition for 34 years. We do not support all these micro nutrients and specialty products that have flooded the markets for the last 10 years. We certainly use them on occasion but for 98% of us the basics are great. Sustainable eating requires a method that you ca actually do on a regular basis.
Inside of this category includes supplementation, vitamins, herbs, glandular supplements, homeopathic, tonics, etc. While we have access to thousands of products, our clinic uses them very little. Bu for some people - they are just the way to go.
In our opinion most clinics and vitamin stores sell WAY too many supplements to people. There is not adequate clinical information to support such sales. There are too many people in health food stores acting as doctors and it is a major reason so many supplements are being banned in Canada. Unless you tell someone in a store aisle your full medical history, and they understand it – these prescriptions may interact with your medicines, or just not work at all.
Cupping: We have had people from all over the world tell us how their Grandmother or even their family doctor did this to them. It really seems a world wide therapy, not just Asian.
We have 10 years of ‘every day’ experience in cupping. It is the application of suction cups or a scraping tool (done well it’s not too painful). It basically pulls a lot of blood to a localized area, which can provide a stronger localized immune response.
In theory, the draw of blood releases trapped matter in the muscle fibers bringing it up to the surface for the lymph system to take it away. It allows muscles to contract and expand easier. It’s a miracle for whiplash and most contact injuries. Once the ‘matter or old injury’ is ‘sucked out’, a person no longer gets the purple marks from the cupping. It’s very interesting how well it works.
We use pneumatic cups 99% of the time; traditionally practitioners use ‘fire’ cupping. This does look very impressive but can burn people. We have 8 styles of cups for all occasions. We even have two sets for face lifting. The pneumatic type allows a better control over how much vacuum is in the suction, preventing bruising.
Gua Sha: is loosely translated as ‘scraping’. A tool is used to gently scrape the skin and does similar things as cupping does. Sometimes it does it better and therefore is used when needed.
Health Kinesiology: Ward studied with the founder. It is another applied Kinesiology that uses a variety of techniques to affect healing. You can read more at SubtleEnergy.com
Jan Cole Repatterning: Jan is a lady that spent half her life inside the school system educating people and then the second life in Kinesiology doing the same. Her two big books and courses: Repattern your Sabotage Ways and Making Money your Friend.
Lifestyle counseling: While not registered or certified as a counselor, Ward has read over 1000 books on self improvement, taken 30+ multi day courses, 50+ one day courses and spent 8 years working under people doing it. We have come to the conclusion we are all doing the best we can at that moment. With that simple understanding we can figure out just where we actually are, where a person would like to go and from that build a map on how it could be done.
It is never about how a person is doing it wrong. It is always about how it may be done easier, better and gentler to oneself.
Physical Rehabilitation: One of the things that contributes to the clinic is the amount that Ward and Heather have been injured in the past. They have experienced most of the ways a person can experience pain, spending years in physical rehab, spinal rehab, physio, sports trainers, hospitals and rehab (prior to 1996!). While we often refer out to a fantastic specialist, we know a lot about strengthening and stretching parts of the body. Just ask our clients about the ‘homework’ they receive!
Tui-Na (massage): Shiatsu and all the other forms of friction/massage therapy. We use as much of it as necessary and not much more. There are as many styles of massage as people doing it. Ours is a mix of the hundreds of massage treatments and courses available.
Common sense therapy: While there’s another 10-20 therapies and diplomas to talk about, sometimes a person just needs to hear plain common sense. The most effective therapy we know of.
